Massimo Padalino is Associate Professor of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Padova. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1995, and he finished his specialty residency in cardiac surgery in 2000 in the same University. Above that, he has been a Research Fellow in Cardiovascular Pathology in 1996-1997 at the Cardiac Registry, Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston,MA, USA. In 2000, he completed his USMLE certification, and he was trained in adult, paediatric and congenital cardiac surgery as Clinical Fellow in USA (Department of Cardiac Surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN ,2001; Department of Cardiovascular Surgery Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA 2002; Division of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery , Mott Children’s Hospital, University of Michigan-Medical School, Ann Arbor, Michigan ,2003).
He came back to Padova in 2004 and started working as pediatric and congenital cardiac surgeon at the Pediatric Cardiac surgery section of the University of Padova. He completed his PhD in Cardiovascular Sciences in 2008 at the same University, where he subsequently achieved his Master in Cardiovascular Pathology (2010) and in Paediatric Cardiology (2014). He is associate professor of cardiac surgery since 2019. He is a senior surgeon with more than 1500 surgical procedures as surgeon. He is member of EACTS, ECHSA, SICP, SICCH, Member of ESC working groups in Cardiac Surgery and Adult congenital cardiac surgery. He has more than 150 papers in international peer reviewed journals, and he wrote several chapters in books, and 2 monographies and a Handbook of paediatric Cardiac surgery for residents and nurses. His research interests are congenital heart disease in neonates, children and grown up, Fontan circulation, end stage heart failure in children and innovative treatments, AAOCA, VAD and ECMO, decellularized heart valves, multicentric clinical studies.. He has been local investigator in 2 EU funded european projects ESPOIR (FP7/2007-2013)and ARISE (Horizon 2020), for use of decellularized homografts in repair of congenital heart disease. He is currently leading the EURO-AAOCA multicenter prospective study on AAOCA.
Since 2020 he is eligible as full professor in cardiac surgery (Abilitazione Nazionale a Professore di I fascia), and he is "Referente di Branca specialistica in chirurgia delle cardiopatie congenite in età evolutiva." at the University Hospital of Padova. His current H index is 24. He has been involved in humanitarian experiences in Africa and middle-east; other interest are contemporary architecture and art, traveling, cuisine and sports.
